Life in Downtown State College

As high rises and other modern structures continue to replace or dominate historic buildings and districts in our area, what is left are memories and a few photos of early streetscapes that people have wisely documented or captured over the years.

We owe thanks to Helen Breon Volz (1937-2015) for writing her memories of living in downtown State College and to Joan Brower, Grace Strong and Carl Volz and the State College High School, Class of 1954 for preserving this piece of State College History.

This story is in PDF form and we share it with permission from Joan Brower, one of the article’s collaborators and for her donation of this history to the Centre County Historical Society.

It may be downloaded or printed and enjoyed. If you have memories or photographs you would like to share, they may be emailed to info@centrecountyhistory.org or shared on the Historical Society’s Facebook page.
