The War They Won

Centre County native Hobie Kistler spent 17 years interviewing WWII veterans, and capturing their WWII experiences before they were lost. The veterans span the globe, but many lived right here in Centre County. Their stories have been woven together into a narrative that encompasses the entire war, as told through the veterans’ first-hand experiences.

Learn the hardships and experiences of these soldiers and sailors, men and women, who sacrificed so much during this pivotal world conflict. The veterans who lived these stories have passed on, but the tales they shared have been preserved by the author in his 2026 book, The War They Won.

Lt. Hobart Kistler, USN, was a U.S. Naval officer and oral historian. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and Johns Hopkins University and served three deployments in the U.S. Navy. His father, Tom Kistler, is the retired president judge of Centre County.
